I don't often wear high heels but when I do... I ask Dr. Al's advice first!

Recently one of my patients came in wearing shoes similar to these that were five inches high from heel to floor! The interesting thing was that she said that they were some of the most comfortable shoes she wore. This was not the first time a patient has told me this and several patients have also come to me specifically because they had hurt their ankles and could no longer wear their high heels and demanded that I fix them so they could!

While I don’t normally recommend heels this high I know that some of you insist on wearing them. This being the case I thought I would offer some suggestion and recommendations to help you decide on whether or not you should Wear Those Heels!

First of all you need to know that biomechanically our feet are capable of incredible feats, pun intended, of activity. They are relatively small compared to our body and yet they easily carry our weight all throughout our day mostly without complaint even when we have gained significant weight over the years. They allow us to wear heels, walk, run, leap and land with ease and we usually take it all for granted, until an injury occurs. The first symptoms may not occur right away or they may show up in the shin, knee or hip but they actually have their root in our poor little foot. Many times injuries in our youth especially ankle sprains, even in pre-teen age, can come back to haunt us starting in the late 20’s and early 30’s leading to very specific problems. Here are some common problems from old ankle sprains: Bunions, flat feet, weak ankles, shin splints, deviated toes, pain when wearing high heels as well as compensation problems in the knees and hips.

Now here is the good news, many of these problems can be either cured or alleviated with Dr. Nunez’s 3D Chiropractic methods and Pressure-Plus-Motion PPM. The real exciting part is that we teach you how to do the PPM yourself so you can control your symptoms in the future!

Now, back to the heel question, to heel or not to heel, two inches, three inches, five inches, how to know? Generally I have found that two to three inches can be quite well tolerated by most women without pain. Flats are fine to wear as long as you have had your feet, legs and knees properly strengthened and lengthened by a 3D chiropractic practitioner. As far as four to five inch heels are concerned, I definitely believe that although they may be beautiful, they are the spawn of the devil and I do not recommend it but, if it is not causing pain in the feet, knees or low back then who am I to say what an individual is capable of. If you do have pain, don’t wait, come on down and let’s get you dancing again!

Yours for better health,

Dr. Al thoroughness Nunez

What's the Panda Say! - Dr. Nunez’s Secret Ingredient

Recently I was working on a patient for her stomach tension and I mentioned to her that this was my Secret Ingredient. In other words, this was what made our treatment special and more effective than other methods. But the more I reflected on it, I realized there was much more to it than that.

Was the Secret Ingredient the non-forceful, no twisting, popping or cracking adjusting method? So many people come to our office for this reason alone: fear of conventional adjusting techniques. Yes, that is part of the Secret Ingredient, but that is not "it".

Was it the Pressure-Plus-Motion muscle release technique that we developed to break-up chronically tense muscles? This is the method that we also teach to patients to help them help themselves and minimize the necessity of treatments. Is that it? Well, yes, but that’s still not the whole story.

How about the 3-Dimensional Chiropractic philosophy that we’ve developed; showing that traumatic events in youth, either physical or emotional, cause chronic tension in the abdomen and other areas? Over time this leads to chronic pain and tension in the neck, back and limbs. Definitely true and crucial but still not the Secret Ingredient.

Those of you who have seen the movie Kung Fu Panda will be quite familiar with the idea of a Secret Ingredient. In the movie, the main character Po realizes that the Secret Ingredient he was missing was already inside of him and he just needed to utilize it. If that is the case, then is the Secret Ingredient simply Dr. Nunez? That is part of it, but then it became clear: the Secret Ingredient is not me but we!
If you come in with a good attitude and willingness, keep your appointments and do the home exercises while I bring all my knowledge, experience, wisdom and strength to the table, our chances for success will be much greater. To borrow a phrase:

"Together we can do what alone I could not."

That, my friends, is Dr. Nunez’s Secret Ingredient: US!

Another way to say it:

"With Your Will and My Skill,
There’s Not Much That We Can’t Heal"

Therefore, my friends, when you’re telling your family, friends and co-workers to come to me for solutions to their ailments, please remind them that they need to be ready to work hard, ready to change, and ready for a new life: a life without pain! We look forward to seeing you and your referrals in the coming year.

Yours Sincerely In Health and remember, thoroughness is my middle name!

15 Ways to say Pain, One Great Solution: 3D Chiropractic Technique!

At our office we get people from every race and tongue and I have found it fascinating to ask people how to say "pain" in their native language. We also have patients who don't speak any English at all and so I need an interpreter to translate what I am asking and to tell me what the patient is saying. Over the years the number of ways to say pain started to add up and when the number hit 15 I decided it might be interesting to share some of these stories with you. The first alternate word for pain I learned, naturally, being of a Hispanic heritage is Dolor and a lot of pain is Mucho Dolor. Knowing this and watching the patient's physical reactions to my examination and treatment as well as asking the question, "Te dueles?", I was able to get all the information I needed to make a diagnosis.

Being located in Glendale, many of my patients are of Armenian heritage and I found out that Tsav is the word for pain, Tsavma means painful and Shott Tsavma means, "a lotta pain". Patients who are not familiar with our language feel more at home and comfortable with someone who can at least speak a few words of their native tongue and it helps me to keep my brain sharp to constantly be learning new things.

One of my patients was from Sri Lanka and, although he was fluent in English, after helping him with his pain he brought his mother in who spoke very little English. He taught me the word for pain in Sri Lankan was Ridinoah, a bit many syllables as far as I'm concerned because when I am in pain there is nothing that relieves the pain as much as saying a good quick Ouch! He also told me later that his mother was very touched that I would make the effort to learn at least one word from her language.

We also have Keev' in Hebrew, Smertz in German, Smerte in Danish, Itai' in Japanese, A'po in Korean, Dolor'e in Italian, Tong in Chinese and Kipu in Finnish.

That's one of the things I love about L.A. is the fantastic number of ethnic communities in the area. Many times when I help one person from a particular heritage, the word gets out and the next thing you know I'm getting a whole slew of friends and family from that group.

I can trace perhaps 90 per cent of my Korean population back to one person! The same is true of my Armenian patients; one person became a mighty root that has grown into a huge tree of new success stories of people being helped by 3-D Chiropractic techniques.

We also have learned Masakit' or Arai! in the Philipino language, Waja'! in Arabic and Bailid'! in the Russian tongue.

No matter how you say pain you all know that there is often one great solution:
3D Chiropractic Technique! Because of the simplicity of the principles of 3DCT and the thoroughness of our exam procedures, even people who don't speak my language can understand exactly what their problem is and, therefore can understand the solution to their problem. Our analysis of the muscles and bones does not require us to speak to the patient during treatment so often an interpreter is only needed on the first visit. If you know of a friend or relative that is suffering from a chronic pain but is afraid to come in because they speak another language please let them know that I know pain in 15 different languages!

Yours Sincerely In Health and remember, thoroughness is my middle name!

"Fight Pain With Food"

Dr. Nuñez and Dr Subia are honored to have the opportunity to share some valuable information with our patients.

We have invited holistic nutrition consultant, Kim McGee, BS, NC, to speak on how to you can support your health with a more organic, whole food perspective. Ms. McGee will also discuss how you can add exercise and lifestyle guidelines to your routine based on your individual needs. This presentation will focus on inflammation. Many of 3DChiro’s patients may be suffering from arthritis, limited mobility or are recovering from surgery--all of which fall under the inflammation category. Even if you are a weekend warrior/sports enthusiast, you occasionally have to deal with inflammation due to exercise.

Ms. McGee studied at Bauman College in Santa Cruz, CA and is a member of the National Association for Nutrition Professionals (NANP) as well as a member of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN).
