Incontinence: The Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About

You get up to go to the bathroom three, four, sometimes even five times a night. You suffer from frequent urination. And this is, many times, just the tip of the iceberg. Men and women both suffer. Sometimes the causes are major. But many times, they can be solved by just a few visits to your chiropractor.

For men, the problem of frequent urination is usually accompanied by the inability to start the urine stream and low flow once the stream is initiated.

In women, frequent urination can be characterized by the incomplete emptying of the bladder. However, the symptom that can cause the most embarrassment is exertion incontinence.

Exertion incontinence, which is defined as uncontrolled urination when you exert yourself, can be triggered by simple physical activity; it can even be caused by sneezing. In men, the source of urination related problems can be traced to the prostate gland. Because the prostate is located in the lower abdomen, excessive tension in the lower abdomen or the lower back and pelvis area can constrict the prostate. While I recommend that men with severe problems be checked out by an urologist, many cases can be helped by chiropractic treatment. At no time is it necessary for me to perform any invasive procedures, such as a rectal examination. Per usual, we are treating muscle tension through Pressure Plus Motion and chiropractic adjustments.

In the case of a male patient I saw recently, simple adjustments were able to solve his problem. His complaint was low flow, fifty to sixty percent of what should be expected. When his urologist prescribed medications, his flow improved slightly, but remained well below normal. He was still getting up at least three times a night to urinate.

He wanted to get off the medications because of the negative side effects. Upon examination I discovered severe tightness in his lower abdomen. After a series of adjustments, his flow increased to ninety percent. He no longer has to get up at all during the night to go to the bathroom. In addition, he has stopped taking the medications. And this was after only three visits to our office.

Recently, we treated a female patient who complained because she had to go to the bathroom every hour all night long. As a child she suffered from rheumatic fever but did not want to use a bedpan. We adjusted her bladder above the pubic bone and did lower back adjustments. After four visits to 3D Chiro, she now gets up just once per night. Women with frequent urination problems should first consult their gynecologist to rule out any serious problems before scheduling an appointment with us.

As with many medical problems, even the least likely such as incontinence, chiropractic adjustments is a viable option for treatment. While incontinence can be caused by serious medical problems that a doctor should evaluate prior to chiropractic visits, there is a large population of individuals with a solution as simple as 3D Chiro for treating incontinence.

Sincerely,
Dr. Al

Men

There are three common types of incontinence in men. If you resonate with any of these, you should contact your health care professional for advice on how to proceed with treatment. The first type is stress incontinence, which is the involuntary loss of urine during stressful actions such as coughing, sneezing, and lifting that put abdominal pressure on the bladder. The second classification is urge incontinence, which is the involuntary exertion of urine following an overwhelming urge to urinate that cannot be hindered. The third is overflow incontinence, which is the constant trickle of urine usually associated with urinating frequently but in small amounts.

It is important to remember that incontinence is a medical problem and not a cause for embarrassment. Your health care provider can help you find a solution. For some, medication may be prescribed, but like the aforementioned patient of Dr. Nunez, you may find chiropractic treatments more effective in preventing any type of incontinence.

Women

A little acknowledged fact is that women experience incontinence twice as often as men. Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and the structure of the female urinary tract lead to this drastically bias statistic. Women can suffer from the same types of incontinence as men but also a few others due to the difference in the female urinary tract. Older women tend to suffer from incontinence more often than younger women. While no single treatment works for everyone, many women can find improvement without surgery. Your doctor or nurse can help you find a solution whether it is medication or chiropractic treatment. It can be encouraging to remember that all types of urinary incontinence are treatable in some way and at all ages. Whatever your age or gender, incontinence is not something to be embarrassed by. As has been made evident, urinary problems are common in both genders and can occur at any age despite its common association with the elderly community. No one should have to suffer alone because of embarrassment. Be sure to tell your health care professional if you feel you may be suffering from incontinence as well as Dr. Nunez, he may be able to help!

The SURPRISING truth about Acne, Chronic Pain and your Chiropractor?

Why would a person go to a chiropractor for an acne problem? "It just doesn't make sense." It is a "medical" problem. It is a "dermatological" problem. It "runs in the family". It is "chronic and I was told I'm just going to have to live with it."

These are common things patients have said to me when I mention that I may be able to help their acne problems. I usually evaluate the skin of the face, shoulders, back and arms during the course of my examination. Why? Remember the precept of 3-D Chiropractic: "traumatic events of youth," whether physical or emotional can lead to tensing of various muscles which can become chronic.

Chronic tension in the muscles leads to a slight decrease of circulation in the muscle itself and the surrounding tissues. In this context, circulation is defined blood flow, nerve flow, energy flow and most importantly for acne sufferers, lymph flow. Your acne could be caused by a backup of lymph flow known as lymph edema (swollen glands). This is due to chronic muscles tension of the neck and jaw interfering with the proper drainage of lymph channels. Lymph channels in the body drain away waste products between cells as a natural process of cell activity.

As you can see from the accompanying illustration, are the all too of ten forgotten circulation that drains waste products of all systems. The process is easily slowed or blocked by chronically over-tense muscles. Therefore, acne could not only be on the face but on the back as well.

When I see changes in the skin, such as acne, I immediately wonder which flow has been disturbed to cause these symptoms. If the waste products are not being drained away from tissues, build up continues until swelling forms under the skin, becoming acne. In mild cases better skin care, creams, and avoidance of sweets or oily foods may be able to reduce the symptoms. However, in severe or chronic cases, this alone will not solve the problem.

In a previous newsletter we wrote about temperomandibular joint pain or jaw pain and how various injuries to the jaw in the past can lead to jaw pain in the present. These same injuries are often the cause of jaw tension that interferes with the lymph drainage from facial skin causing acne or in severe cases, cystic acne.

A thorough history will often reveal some trauma to the jaw in the past that was never properly treated. Acne sometimes doesn't show up until later and the connection to the trauma is almost never made.

Once the diagnosis is made, treatment is directed to the muscles of the jaw and home exercises are given to teach the patient how to treat their own muscles at home using Pressure-Plus-Motion (PPM) methods and jaw relaxation techniques.

We have many testimonials of our success with acne reduction but I wanted you to read one in particular below that should give hope to many of your friends or family with these problems.

Call us if you or a friend has tried everything else and it seems like you're "just going to have to live with it;" we may be able to help. Remember that at 3-D Chiropractic, we love a challenge! Please call us or send this newsletter to a friend that you feel could be helped. We would love to hear from you.

Sincerely, Dr. Al

Testimonial

"Thank you Dr. Nunez! God Bless you and your gift."

"I'm so thankful for what Dr. Nunez has done for me. His method/technique has tremendously helped me overcome over 13 years of persistent painful cystic acne breakouts on my face. At times, my acne was so bad that simply speaking was unbearably painful! My jaw-line and cheekbones used to be covered with overlapping cystic acne, which would throb relentlessly. Upon seeking Dr. Nunez's help, I learned that an old injury to my jaw, at age 14, had caused tension in the jaw-line resulting in the lack of blood flow in the area, hence causing the cystic breakouts which started about a year after the incident had occurred.

Throughout those years I took numerous medications and antibiotics prescribed by different doctors, tried every product advertised, tried out facials of different sorts, and just about every home remedy I heard of. Some things helped a little for a short period of time, some aggravated the acne more, while the others had no affect at all. I honestly tried everything short of Accutane which was an option I wasn't willing to resort to, due to all the controversial side effects involved.

Since Dr. Nunez's treatments, my acne has cleared, only leaving behind the scarred memory of the cystic monsters that had taken over my face, and my life. He has also helped eliminate the frequent tension headaches I endured during those years, along with the clicking and locking of my jaw, of which I was told only surgery, could cure. I've learned that every other treatment out there helps with the symptoms (the acne) stemming from the root of the problem. You cannot treat this disease without treating the source, or the reason why you're breaking out in the first place. "

Acne Medication

On average, Americans spend more than $100 million a year for various over-the-counter products related to acne problems. The overall cost of acne treatment exceeds $1 billion annually in the United States. Most acne treatments are not a treatment at all. The ones that do work in patients take up to twelve weeks for a positive result to show. Some medications can even cause acne to get worse before it gets better, leaving patients with increased discomfort and dissatisfaction. In addition, each skin type may be sensitive to different medications. In other words, what may work for one person may not work for another. As previously stated, Americans spend immense quantities of money on taking the bet on a medication that may or may not be effective. Over the counter medications may seem like a cheaper alternative to prescription acne treatment, but these will cost more in the long run as they have an even lower chance of effectively clearing skin of acne. A person may have to try several medications and wait years until finding a medication that successfully clears skin. The bottom line is this: acne medication is an expensive and tedious gamble.

Chronic Acne

Although 85% of Americans will experience acne at some point in their lives, not everyone will have to suffer the consequences of physical pain and agony associated with chronic acne. This goes beyond an occasional pimple  or even a rare breakout. People with severe acne may have extremely red, inflamed, and deep acne lesions that could lead to scarring. While acne is commonly associated with being a cosmetic issue, its more severe cases are much more. This type of chronic acne can affect people from teen years as “adolescent acne” to “late-onset acne.” Like most medical problems and discomforts, the cases vary from person to person. There are many factors and causes of acne, but with so much of the population suffering from its discomforts, there are also many options for treatment. Medication and lifestyle changes may be effective initially, but can also fall short in the long run. It is important to assess every component of one’s acne to discover causes and, ultimately, cures for chronic acne.

Have you Heard of NERD and GERD?

Chiropractic Monthly - January 2014

Thank you all for your continued support and patronage. It has been our pleasure to serve your needs this last year and look forward to continuing the healing process as the New Year arrives. We here at 3D Chiropractic hope you had a great Thanksgiving and are looking forward to your holiday meals.

It is, for most of us, a beautiful thing to see a huge spread laid out for all to enjoy. For some it is a time of distress and caution because we know a meal brings with it, indigestion, heartburn, bloating, gastritis, etc.

There are a variety of very involved tests that doctors can perform in an attempt to verify the presence of reflux disease in a patient. Among these tests, they put tubes into your stomach through your nose to visually inspect the lining of your esophagus or test the acid concentration in your stomach.

If you suffer from GERD or NERD you are quite familiar with these symptoms. These wonderful events no longer need to be miserable. If your meal usually includes a dessert of antacids, do not despair.

As with most medications, acid-reducing medications, may offer short term relief but must be taken daily for consistent relief. We have often discussed that there are always side-effects with taking these medicines such as bone fractures, bacterial infections and decreased absorption of key nutrients, including magnesium, calcium and vitamin B-12.

For those of you unfamiliar with GERD or Nerd, here’s a little background. Our hope for you is that you may identify with a mystery symptom you have and may now find relief.

GERD stands for Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease. With GERD, after a meal, stomach acids reflux back up into the esophageal area and even into the throat. These acids not only taste bad, they are bad for you. They can cause erosions in the esophagus which can, over time, make it difficult to swallow. Who wants to deal with that when all that good food is just waiting to be consumed?

New research now shows that up to half of GERD sufferers are unable to get even short term relief from their symptoms with acid reducing drugs. These same people show no signs of the erosive effects of the acid in their esophagus. Gastroenterologists have dubbed this condition non-erosive reflux diseases, or NERD and experts now say that up to 50 to 70 percent of GERD patients actually have NERD. Studies further show that those at higher risk are most likely female, younger and thinner. Patients’ symptoms often are preceded by severe, sustained stress in the six months prior to their symptoms. More than 113 million prescriptions are filled for acid-reducing drugs each year!

When doctors can’t determine what is causing your symptoms they diagnose you with “functional heartburn.” In other words, they don’t know what the problem is! They have many theories but no results.

They do agree there is a direct correlation between a high level of psychological stressand GERD and NERD. Now we’re talking my language.

Now for the good news, many of you have experienced significant or total relief from your symptoms with the 3D Chiropractic method.

As my patients know, when I first evaluate each new patient, I go into depth asking what your stress levels are, what is causing the stress. We then ask about any traumatic events from your youth. This is often when we find a correlation between these events and tension in the upper abdomen. This tension is most often the culprit. The stress and tension can be present long after the initial events or environmental stress has passed.

Now we’re ready to set up a treatment plan of how to specifically deal with these factors. Using the 3D Chiropractic method of treatment, we are able to quickly give relief to most patients suffer from the GERD or NERD conditions. Then we teach you, our patients how to “adjust” your own stomach to help you to take control of your symptoms.

If you or a friend is dreading the holidays and the meals that come with them because of GERD or NERD symptoms, come in and let’s see what we can do for you. You may also want to simply send a copy of this newsletter to your friend; it just might change your liveliness and make their Christmas a bit merrier!

Have a great Christmas Season and a Wonderful New
Year!

Yours in Health,
Dr. Al
